RESEARCH QUESTION
Can the pleasantness of two notes played together be measured and linked to the ratio of their frequencies?
Scientific background
Two notes whose frequencies form simple ratios, such as 2:1 for an octave or 3:2 for a perfect fifth, tend to sound consonant. Notes with close but unequal frequencies interfere and produce beats, which listeners hear as roughness.
